Public Colleges in Canada

Public College Studies

What is a

Public College in Canada?

Public colleges are educational institutions financed by state governments and because of this they are extremely well structured and have several course options.

The great attraction of the public college, in addition to the quality of teaching, is the possibility of obtaining the PGWP (Post Graduation Work Permit). This document allows International students to stay in the country for 1 to 3 more years, depending on the duration of their course. During this period, students can work full-time and have the possibility of being permanently accepted in Canada.

In addition, public colleges are advantageous for those with families. The spouse of the enrolled student can obtain an OWP – Open Work Permit, which allows full-time work. If the couple has children over the age of 5, they can be enrolled in a Canadian public school for free.

In order to study and work in Canada, you must apply for a student visa. The general requirements if you are a student from Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile or another Latin American country, which the Canadian embassies require in order to apply for a study visa are:

  • A letter of acceptance issued by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
  • Demonstrate sufficient income to pay your tuition and your personal expenses.
  • Your valid passport.
  • Have a flight to and from your country of origin. (If the program is less than 1 year)
  • Obey the law, have no criminal record and obtain a certificate of no criminal record if requested.
  • Be in good health and undergo a medical examination if required.
  • Be able to prove to an official that you will be leaving Canada when your study permit ends.

* Depending on your nationality, the required documents may vary slightly.

Once you graduate from the Public College, you have the option of staying and working in Canada by applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP), with which you obtain a work permit for your area of study.

This permit has a duration equivalent to the program completed, up to a maximum of 3 years. The minimum time of studies required to request it is 8 months. Through this permit, you can apply for a Canadian residence visa

And you know what’s best? If you travel with your partner, he or she can work full time for the duration of your study program.

If you wish to stay in Canada temporarily to work and have graduated from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), at the end of some study programs it is possible to apply to the PGWP. To apply you have 180 days after obtaining the final grades of the course and your student permit must be valid, as well as your passport (for the period that the PGWP will be valid) to avoid any problems.

The duration of the PGWP depends on how long you have completed your study program. If your program was for a period of more than 8 months but less than 2 years, a valid PGWP can be granted up to the same duration of your study program. If your program was 2 years or more, a PGWP can be granted with a validity of up to 3 years.

After finishing your PGWP period you have the possibility to start a process to obtain Canadian Permanent Residence.
